Autodesk 3D Studio Max or 3DS Max is a 3 year license priced at $3675. Is the software worth it? YES! It is!
But suppose you are not a graphic design student at FIDM. Maybe you do not work for EA or Blizzard making games and models. Maybe you do not go to a campus or work site that allows you to have free access to such goodies.
Try using Blender!
There is also GMAX which is the freeware early release version of 3DS Max. But, GMAX is very limited and glitchy. It is great to learn on.
Mudbox runs for $795. Much cheaper! But it is still about the cost of a month's rent!
Try using Sculptris!
You can sculpt the "clay" molds and export images. This may be all you need!
You can also create crafts and landscapes for PC games like Halo and Flight Simulator using such 3D design software!
